The College and University

Cambridge is a collegiate university, which means that all students are members both of a College and of the University. The University has departments and faculties which provide the environment and research facilities for all students, regardless of the College to which they belong. It is also the University which sets any examinations and awards degrees.

The Colleges are self-governing communities which provide academic and pastoral support for their students. They also provide accommodation, dining, social and sports facilities: your College is your home in Cambridge - a place where you are known, will make many friends and where you are looked after and treated as an individual. Life as a research student, especially in Arts subjects, can be rather solitary, so being part of a College community is of considerable benefit.

The procedure for graduate admissions for both part-time and full-time degrees is the responsibility of the Board of Graduate Studies and is fully described in the University's Graduate Prospectus.

At graduate level, all Colleges' admissions procedures follow those of the Board and the appropriate department.
