The name: the Spencer Fairest Fellowship in Law
This appeal has at its root a desire to honour two academic lawyers whose names are synonymous with the study of Law at Selwyn: Professor Paul Fairest, who became a Fellow in 1964 and was responsible for creating the tradition of Law teaching at Selwyn, and Professor John Spencer, who surely needs no introduction.
The target: an endowment of £1.1 million to fund this Fellowship in perpetuity
Through the generosity of alumni, and one particularly philanthropic pledge of £500,000, the College has now raised 93% of the funds, £1.02M of the £1.1M target. There is only £80,000 remaining until we have reached our goal, and I ask for your help in completing the endowment.
Law at Selwyn today
At the time of writing, Selwyn is in the fortunate position of having three Fellows in Law: Professor John Spencer, Dr Janet O'Sullivan and Dr James McComish. Being able to provide the bulk of undergraduate law teaching within College has been enormously beneficial and has played a major role in driving Selwyn up the academic league tables.
The need: why endow a Fellowship and why now?
Professor John Spencer is due to retire in 2013. Continuing the work which Paul Fairest began, John has been a guide and inspiration to generations of Selwyn’s law students for 41 years, and he will be greatly missed. However, Selwyn is determined to ensure that the continuity of teaching provision in Law will not be broken with his retirement.
