Revd Canon Dr John Sweet

10 June 1927 - 2 July 2009

The College is very sad to announce the death of John Sweet MA (Oxon), DD (Lambeth), Fellow, former Chaplain and Dean of Chapel of Selwyn College.

Educated at Eton and New College, Oxford, John came to Cambridge to train for the Ministry at Westcott House in 1953. Ordained as deacon in 1955 and priest in 1956, he was first appointed curate at St Mark's, Mansfield, returning to Cambridge in 1958 as Selwyn's Chaplain. He remained at Selwyn for the rest of his long and distinguished career, serving at various times as Dean of Chapel, Tutor, Director of Studies in Theology, Vice-Master and Acting Master, retiring in 1994. Following his retirement, John remained active in College and Chapel until the end, offering his tremendous energy and prodigious memory of things Selwyn to the generations that succeeded him. He is survived by his wife Mary, whom he married in 1961, his son, Richard, his two daughters, Alison and Roey, and four grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by the whole College community and his many friends.

A book of condolences has been set up to which alumni and others are invited to contribute. Alternatively, messages can be sent to the Master's Assistant, Selwyn College, Cambridge CB3 9DQ.
