The Selwyn Association was founded in 1936 with the objects, as set out then in the preamble to the Rules, of acting:

  • to provide an organisation which may keep all members of Selwyn all over the world in touch with the College and with one another;
  • to make such arrangements conducive to drawing together members of Selwyn by social gatherings or otherwise; and
  • to ensure, when needful, united action on the part of members of Selwyn in matters connected with the welfare of the College.

Today, practically all alumni events and functions are organised through the Development & Alumni Relations Office.  For a list of forthcoming member events see Events.  The organisation has changed and language would doubtless have been rather different if the preamble to the Rules had been written in 2009, but the sentiments and objectives remain the same.

The Alumni Association Committee, comprising representatives from the alumni body and College, oversees the organisation's activities.  Its primary function is to act as a conduit between the alumni and the College and to take initiatives appropriate to promoting the objectives of the Alumni Association.  Clearly, it is not the only line of communication, but the Committee welcomes comments, feedback or suggestions from alumni on any aspect of College-alumni relations.  Although the Committee is independent of the Development & Alumni Relations Office, there is a close working relationship between the two.

The President of the Alumni Association and new members of the Committee are elected at the Annual General Meeting, which takes place immediately before the Annual Dinner in September (see Events).  The President chairs the AGM and proposes the toast to the College at the Annual Dinner.  Elected members of the Committee serve for four years.  Details are to be found in the Rules of the Association.
