INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL CHORAL EXHIBITONERS
CHORAL EXHIBITIONS (SELWYN STUDENTS)
Choral Exhibitioners are appointed by the College Council for three years, through the Inter-Collegiate Awards Scheme, and are expected to give a full commitment to the choir. They are also encouraged to participate in music in the college in general (many Choral Exhibitioners are on the committee of the College Music Society, for example). All Selwyn and Newnham academic offer-holders will be invited to apply for a choral award. The deadline for applying is 15 February 2013, and auditions for offer-holders will take place after the end of the Lent Term (18-20 March 2013). Further information on applying and an onlie application form are available from the University Undergraduate Admissions Prospectus . As well as a financial stipend (currently £100 per year, as is the case for all of the Colleges in Cambridge), all Choral Exhibitioners are given a substantial subsidy towards singing lessons (currently £350 per year), which can be taken with any of the University's fine visiting teachers. Most Selwyn choir members study with Anita Morrison or Giles Underwood, who teach in Selwyn and Newnham colleges respectively. Various other teachers visit Cambridge regularly, and choir members may study with them if they wish. The subsidy for lessons may also be used towards instrumental and Alexander Technique lessons. Choral Exhibitioners reading Music will be given a piano in their room, and an increased subsidy to allow for lessons on more than one instrument (the current total subsidy for Music students holding a Music Award is £500 per year).
CHORAL EXHIBITIONS (NEWNHAM STUDENTS)
Newnham College Choral Exhibitions are held in Selwyn College Chapel Choir. The Colleges share the Chapel and the Chaplain, and there is a long tradition of Newnham women singing in Selwyn Chapel Choir. There are also places in the choir for Newnham volunteers. Newnham offers up to two Choral Awards per year, and each Award is tenable for three years. The Award is equivalent in financial value to that at Selwyn, in both stipend and lesson allowance (see above). The application procedure is the same as for Selwyn students, and when space permits, auditions for Newnham students already in residence are held during the first week of the Michaelmas Term, and awards are made by the College Council on the recommendation of the Director of Music at Selwyn. Newnham Choral Exhibitioners are expected to play a leading role in music-making at Newnham as well (many Newnham Choral Exhibitioners are on the committee of the Newnham Raleigh Music Society).
VOLUNTEERS
Every year, extra places in the choir are filled by volunteers, some of whom are at colleges other than Selwyn and Newnham. Volunteers receive the same subsidy as Choral Exhibitioners for singing lessons (£350 per year), as well as for meals and tours. When space and money permits, volunteers from Selwyn and Newnham who show particular dedication and skill can be recommended for Choral Exhibitions after a year's service (and occasionally upon initial entry to the choir). Volunteers are initially appointed for one year, and places are renewable annually as long as space permits. Any current or prospective students who are interested in singing in the choir as a volunteer should contact the Director of Music (seam100@cam.ac.uk).
