Selwyn College pond renovation
The pond in the main garden was reshaped and relined in April 2007. This work had become necessary because the roots of a nearby sugar maple had pierced the liner, leading to a slow leak. Furthermore, the depth of the pond was too great for successful waterlily growth, and a deep pond is difficult to maintain (unless a wetsuit is donned).
The pond was drained and several tons of sand were laid into the pond to make it more shallow, and a new liner was installed. After the work, the 'eye' shape of the pond is once again evident, and the plantings and pond wildlife are now well established.
