Selwyn College PWF (Public Workstation Facilities)

The Selwyn computing facilities are part of the Managed Cluster system of the University Public Workstation Facilities (PWF). They are available to registered users who wish to have access to a wide variety of specialist software or just use the Internet, email and printers.

The Selwyn PWF's are located in Ann's Court Lower Ground Floor (near to the JCR), in Cripps Court (between I and J Stair) and in the Library. All the workstations currently run Windows XP Professional, with access to a mono laser printer in each room; there is also a colour laser printer in Ann's Court Computer room, and a scanner in the Library.  You will require a late key to access these facilities.

Using the PWF computers for Windows XP (Linux is also available)

The machine is probably already switched on. If the screen is blank, try moving the mouse or pressing a key.  If it is switched off, then push the buttons on the front of the monitor and/or the base unit. After a sequence of checks, you can choose Linux or wait for the default Windows to start. After a few seconds you will see the login screen.

1.   Login - Hold down the CTRL, ALT, DEL keys together

2.   You will be presented with a login box, type in your CRSid, e.g. abc123

3.   Then use the [Tab] key or click mouse in the Password box and type in your PWF password (this is initially different from your Email password). On the screen this will appear as ********* to prevent others from reading it. If you entered your username or password incorrectly, you can try again 2 more times before being locked out.

4.   If you have logged in successfully you will see, after a few seconds, the 'Message of the Day'. It is worth reading this to find out if any systems are going to be unavailable at any time. Programs will not work until this notice appears. To close the news screen, click on the close  button at the top right of the window.

5.   Applications accessed by clicking on the   button from taskbar at the bottom of the screen and scroll to 'PWF Programs' to select below programs, Internet, etc, or scroll up to 'PWF Information'  for information:-

Word and Text Processing  - for MS Word, etc, (if application not been run before, it will automatically install).

Utilities  - for resetting PWF password Set Passwords or Balance to check printing balance.

Communications and Networking - browsers, Internet Explorer (Using Webmail for Email) & Library Catalogue.

6.  Printing (collect paper from Porters Lodge and cartridges from IT Office).  The default printers are black and white HP laser printers set for each room.  Best to select file, print, and check correct printer shows in the Name box, especially if you want to select the colour printer selwyn_oc_clj situated in the Ann's Court Computer Room. Further instructions are on the computers.  For long print jobs it may be advisable only to print 20 or so pages at a time.

7. Using your PWF disk space - Each user is allocated 512Mb of disk space. You are asked to use this space wisely.

8. Using the local hard disk - The hard disks on all PWF computers are purged at regular intervals.  Files may temporarily be kept on the local hard disk (C:) during a session, but must be copied to a CD, DVD, USB memory stick or to your personal disk space on the network (U:) and removed from (C:) before logging off.

7. Log off - Close all applications with the close  button, go to  Logoff, Logoff
