Selwyn College Network Registration
All College student rooms and the College Library have connections to the College Network. A charge (currently £34.00) is added to your termly bill for use of this facility. As there are significant administrative costs involved, there is no apportionment of charges for periods of less than one term. There are additional charges if your external usage amounts to more than 6GB over any ten day period. It is your responsibility to inform the IT Office if you change your computer, install a new network card, change rooms, or wish to cancel your connection.
In order to use the College network and thence the Internet you must:
1. Check settings on your computer
Prior to registration
a) Make sure that you have a secure password.
b) Make sure that your network settings are correct, and that 'File and Print Sharing' is not enabled.
c) Make sure that your firewall is ON, and ICMP echo is enabled (for Windows, the program securitycheck.exe can be used for this.
Immediately after registration
d) Make sure that Windows (or other operating system) is up to date. Go to http://www.windowsupdate.com - repeat until no further updates are available.
e) Check that anti-virus and anti-spyware programs are installed and are up to date
2. Connect to the network
In some parts of the College this could be a wireless connection, but in other parts only a cabled connection is available. Cabled connections are generally faster, more reliable and more secure and are therefore recommended. Loan cables can be obtained from the Porters' Lodge for a deposit of £5.00 (refundable on presentation of receipt). With Wireless, you should look for an access point whose name begins 'SC-WIFI'; select the one with the strongest signal.
We also offer connections via eduroam, more difficult to set up, but better for general use.
3. Register
Once you have established either wireless or cabled connection, you need to register. You should only need to do this once a term (unless you are disconnected for security reasons). To do so
a. Open your web browser. You should then see a registration page. (if you get an error message, try any non-secure website - e.g. <http://www.google.com> )
b. If you have a Windows PC
i. You will be asked to check your security settings using a program which you can download.
ii. Note the information supplied. If your Windows is out of date you should update it as soon as you have made a connection to the Internet.
c. In all cases you should ensure that you system is up to date and has appropriate security software (anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall). Failure to do so is likely to result in immediate disconnection.
d. Agree to the conditions of use, and then give personal details requested.
e. If you get a message to the effect that your registration has been successful, you should be able to connect to the internet after 5 minutes or so.
4. Authenticate (Wireless connection only)
With wireless connections, you may be required to authenticate each time you connect, using your Raven login and password. Note that you will have to keep open a browser window to maintain a connection, and may have to re-authenticate every time you start to use the network.
Problems with connections
a. No connection: Check that your cable is properly connected (leftmost socket if there are more than one)
b. No registration page: Settings for networking may be wrong. In particular, you should make sure that your connection is set to automatic (DHCP); this is the default, but you or someone else may have changed it. If you do not know how to ste this correctly, consult the IT Office.
c. Registration fails: You may have mistyped your crsid, or not accepted the conditions.
d. Authentication fails: Your password was incorrect?
5. Use the Network Safely
See Selwyn's Security site for advice on safe network use and software that can help to achieve this.
6. Use the Network Efficiently
Note that excessive use (currently defined as more than 10GB over ten days) will lead to slower access.
See our recommendations for minimising this risk.
7. (Optional) View Recommended Programs
See Selwyn's Software site for some recommended additional programs you might like to consider.
