Selwyn College Network

Before registration to use Selwyn College network, you are required to check that your computer is fully up to date as far as security is concerned and to carry out critical updates if necessary.

You must also have installed an anti-virus program and one or more anti-spyware programs. These must be updated regularly.

If you do not have an anti-virus program, you can obtain one of several programs free of charge.

For Windows, in particular Microsoft Security Essentials is recommended as is Free AVG antivirus. Alternatively, the University provides a freely updated copy of McAfee's VirusScan (see below). For occasional scans we recommend as an additional program Malwarebytes.

For Macintoshes Sophos provide a free (for home use) anti-virus program, or various programs are available from within the University, described here. If you do have an anti-virus program, but it is not regularly updated (usually you have to pay a subscription for this), you should either make sure that you pay any necessary subscription or install one of the programs mentioned above. Note: It is essential first to uninstall any previously installed anti-virus program (except for the basic version of Malwarebytes).

For Windows users we have prepared a program which checks on what, if anything, needs to be done on your computer.

Download the program securitycheck.exe, then double-click on it. A window will appear with some information about the version of Windows and the extent to which it has been updated.

In the securitycheck window, note the following:

  1. Windows Update should be set to Scheduled Install, and must have a date no more than one month ago; once connected it must continue to be updated on a regular basis (at least monthly).

To update, run Windows Update from the Start Menu.

  2. An Antivirus program must be installed and be Up to Date.

    See bordered area above

  3. In Windows a Firewall must be Active.

    Click button to activate.

  4. ICMP Echo Setting must be enabled.

    Click button to enable.

  5. There must be one or more antispyware programs; if installed, Windows Defender should have a date no more than one month ago; other programs must be updated from the supplier.

If any one of these is not the case you will not be able to connect to the College network.

Further information is available on the IT pages.

Please report any problems to the IT Office, tel 01223-335850.

McAfee VirusScan

You can install VirusScan under the University's licence but can only do so after identifying yourself, or when using a computer that is physically within the University's domain. You can get a copy from here, but will have to give your preferred first name and last name as user name, and your UCAS PersonalID as password. The name you use must be exactly the same as the name on the letter from Selwyn College from, or about, your Director of Studies. For example, if your letter is addressed to 'Miss Jane Doe', your username will be 'Jane Doe'. Note: you must first uninstall any previously installed anti-virus program (except for the basic version of Malwarebytes), including other versions of McAfee VirusScan.
