Visit of Archbishop Sentamu
The photographs below were taken during the visit of the Most Revd and Rt
Hon Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, on Trinity Sunday, 11 June 2006. The
Archbishop preached the sermon at Evensong at 6pm, and was later installed as
an Honorary Fellow together with Professor April McMahon, former Fellow of
Selwyn.
The Archbishop read for bachelor's and master's degrees in theology at Selwyn
while preparing for ordination in the 1970s, and completed his doctorate at the
College while serving in parish ministry. He was ordained deacon in the College
Chapel by Bishop Leslie Brown, and served for a time as Selwyn's Assistant
Chaplain.
April McMahon did her MA and PhD at Edinburgh, and was then Fellow, Director of
Studies and University Lecturer in Linguistics at Selwyn from 1988 to 2000. She
was also Tutor (1989-2000) and Praelector (1989-96). She was a Professor at
Sheffield from 2000 to 2004, and since 2005 she has been Forbes Professor of
English Language at Edinburgh. She is a Fellow of the British Academy, and a
Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
The sun shone for the Honorary Fellows, and Fellows, staff, students and
visitors were able to enjoy a perfect summer evening in the beautiful
surroundings of Old Court.
