KEASBEY RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN AMERICAN STUDIES
FURTHER PARTICULARS
Selwyn College invites applications for a
Keasbey Research Fellowship in American Studies tenable for three years from 1
October 2008. The possibility of appointing a more senior scholar who wishes to
come for a year will not be excluded.
The Fellowship is open to candidates in any area
of American Studies.
Candidates must
already hold, or be close to completing, a PhD degree.
The areas of interest of previous holders
have included the history, law and institutions, literature, and music of the
United States.
The holder of the Fellowship is expected to
reside in Cambridge during term, except that, with the consent of the College
Council, periods may be spent away from Cambridge for the purpose of
research.
Research Fellows may, in
consultation with the appropriate Directors of Studies, undertake up to six
hours of supervision of undergraduate students per week.
The initial stipend for a Research Fellow with a
PhD will correspond to the first step of an incremental scale £16,022 - £16,728
- £17,435 (+ cost of living increase pending).
The non-incremental stipend for a Research Fellow without a PhD will be
£14,273.
Supervision payments are
additional and are paid at agreed University rates.
It is expected that accommodation would be available in College
for a single Fellow, at a charge of £99 per annum.
College flats, for which a normal economic rent is charged, are
often available for married Fellows.
Research Fellows enjoy the same privileges as other Fellows; these
include seven free meals at the High Table per week, small allowances for
travel and other expenses incurred by Fellows in connection with their
research, and loans towards the purchase of personal computers.
They are also eligible to join the College’s
private health care scheme, in which case the College pays 50% of the annual
premium.
Research Fellows are eligible
to join the University’s Superannuation Scheme (USS), to which the employee contributes
6.35%.
Further details are available
from the Finance Manager.
Research Fellows are members of the Governing
Body of the College and are eligible for election to the College Council and to
committees.
The College has recently established an exchange
programme with Brown University, Providence RI.
Under the terms of this programme, Fellows of Selwyn may apply
for funding to assist them in making short-term research visits to Brown.
Applications, to include a completed
application
form, a
curriculum vitae, an outline of the candidate's current and
future research, and an
equal opportunities monitoring form should reach The
Master, Selwyn College, Cambridge CB3 9DQ by 8 October 2007.
We regret that applications received after
the closing date cannot be accepted.
Applicants should arrange for THREE references to be sent direct and in
confidence to the Master by the same date.
Referees should be asked to complete and attach a copy of the
form for use by referees.
Those candidates placed on the preliminary
shortlist will be asked to submit written work of up to 30,000 words by 9
November 2007.
The work will be
submitted by the College to an expert assessor, who will be asked to comment on
the originality of the candidate's contribution to the subject and on his/her
potential for future research.
It is expected that a final shortlist will be
drawn up by no later than 11 January 2008, with a view to interviews taking
place on the morning of Saturday 19 January 2008.
