Study Time in Cambridge

Selwyn College offers the opportunity for up to four teachers at secondary and/or sixth-form level to come into residence for between two and four weeks each in the period between 1 February and 31 July 2011.  This period of residence may be divided into one or more sections.

This scheme is intended to give practising teachers in secondary schools or further education colleges an opportunity to come to Cambridge for a period of study and reflection.  It is hoped that the scheme's flexibility will cater for a variety of individual circumstances and appeal to teachers in as wide a range of institutions as possible.  Appropriate uses of the opportunity would include: work towards a book or article, reading or research, contacts with Faculty members and students in areas of interest to a candidate, and/or a chance to find out more about some aspect of Cambridge, such as admissions.

A room in College or in one of the adjacent houses will be provided free of rent for the period of residence.  (Please note that although every effort will be made to provide a superior room with private facilities, there may be times of the year when the pressure on accommodation is such that this will not be possible.)  There is no emolument, but seven free meals (lunch and/or dinner) may be taken each week.  The teachers appointed are given the title of Schoolteacher Fellow Commoners, and are entitled to make use of the Senior Combination Room and the High Table in the same way as Fellows.  A research grant of up to £100 is also available.

Applications should include:

  1. a full curriculum vitae;
  2. a statement of approximately 500 words outlining:
    1. how the candidate proposes to use the time,
    2. why the timing is important to them,
    3. what Cambridge particularly has to offer them,
    4. how this would fit into their career path,
    5. what benefits they would seek from a period of study and reflection in Cambridge;
  3. the names of two referees, one of whom should be the candidate's present Head Teacher. Candidates should also arrange for their two referees to write in confidence to the Admissions Secretary by Friday 4 June 2010.

Interviews are not held for these appointments.

Applications should be sent to the Admissions Secretary, Selwyn College, Cambridge CB3 9DQ (tel: 01223 - 335896; fax 01223 - 331720; e-mail: admissions@sel.cam.ac.uk) to arrive by FRIDAY 4 JUNE 2010.  References (see (iii) above) should arrive by the same date.
