Important Information

Electrical Applicance Registration

Installation and use of electrical appliances for cooking purposes in College rooms is not permitted, other than a kettle. Provided they are correctly connected and are in good working condition, most electrical audio visual and personal care appliances may be used in your room.

Please note that each gyp/ kitchen has a sink, microwave, kettle, toaster, hob and fridge. Students may place small additional cooking items in their gyp room. However, bulky items such as coffee machines, rice cookers, air fryers, etc. are not permitted due to space constraints. Deep fat fryers are strictly forbidden due to the high risk of fire in use.

All electrical appliances containing heating elements or batteries (i.e. heat generating units) should be brought to the maintenance team’s desk in Cripps Court on Saturday, 5th October for Portable Appliance Testing.  After that, please complete a maintenance request at https://maintenance.sel.cam.ac.uk/.

Matriculation

When you join Selwyn College and University of Cambridge, you become part of our community and of the wider community in which we are proud to be located. Members are expected to uphold the values of our institution and as part of joining the community we ask our students to agree to be good citizens by signing up to the University’s and the College’s regulations.

Matriculation marks the formal admission of a student to membership of the University, and a College may not normally allow an unmatriculated student to be a resident member of the College ('in statu pupillari') after the Division (that is, the mid-point) of his or her first term of residence.

A person is deemed to be matriculated from the beginning of the term in which a completed Matriculation Registration Form and satisfactory evidence of his or her qualification to matriculate is known by the College.

Every candidate for matriculation must subscribe to the following declaration by signing the Matriculation Registration Form which includes the first sentence of the text below, which new students will be asked to recite on the morning of Monday 7th October:

I promise to observe the Statutes and Ordinances of the University as far as they concern me, and to pay due respect and obedience to the Chancellor and other officers of the University.

In so doing, I undertake to hold myself to the highest possible standards of personal conduct and act with probity in all matters, avoid actions that would bring the College into disrepute, and abide by the rules and regulations of the College and the University at all times. I shall engage with my academic studies to the very best of my ability; conduct myself with integrity and honesty; respect freedom of expression; and behave towards others with dignity and tolerance.

Use Of Your Room Key

Allocation Of Rooms

In allocating rooms to incoming first-years we occasionally group students with very particular needs together. This is relatively rare and is usually only applied where students have serious allergies, especially food allergies. This is a safety issue. We feel that it is safer for such students to share kitchen facilities with others who are most likely to understand their needs in the light of their own experience rather than placing students at serious risk from allergic reactions amongst others with potentially no experience of such conditions. After the first year students ballot for accommodation and are then free to choose rooms (and kitchen arrangements) as opposed to the College allocation that operates for new students.
