The Bartlam Library

The Bartlam Library, officially opened in Easter Term 2021, is named after Tom Bartlam (SE 1966), the principal benefactor. As part of the final phase of Ann’s Court, this remarkable facility has already transformed the learning environment for our students.

A thoughtfully designed study space

In July 2021, approximately 35,000 books were relocated to the new library, with several thousand older and rare books placed into temporary storage during the refurbishment of the Old Library. The collection was carefully arranged by the Library & Archives department to optimise the library’s functionality: the most-borrowed books are housed on the bustling first floor, while the second-floor reading room is reserved for less-frequently used volumes to preserve an atmosphere of silent study.

Visitors to the College have been captivated by the new Bartlam Library and the adjacent Quarry Whitehouse Auditorium. These facilities, which complete Ann’s Court, have drawn widespread admiration, with many particularly delighted by the breathtaking panoramic views from the lantern atop the tower.

Recognising your generosity

Beneath the colonnade leading to the library entrance, engraved bricks and paving stones bear the names of those who contributed to this endeavour—inscriptions designed to endure for at least a century.

This final part of the Court was widely supported by 1,049 Selwyn alumni and friends, who have named:

  • 450 bricks
  • 55 library chairs
  • 48 auditorium chairs
  • 84 paving stones

Portland stone signs with elegant gilt lettering further commemorate key supporters and spaces, such as the Quarry Whitehouse Auditorium, the Kelvin Chiu Terrace, and the Christopher Dobson Building.

Library chairs discretely honour the donors.

The Bartlam Library stands as a testament to the generosity of our supporters, whose contributions have shaped a space that serves the academic needs of the Selwyn community. We are deeply grateful to everyone who made this project possible.

Be part of the next chapter of Selwyn’s development

As a college that was founded in the late 19th century without an endowment, the development of Selwyn’s estate has always depended on the generosity of benefactors, both alumni and other friends.  In the 21st century, the college continues to evolve plans to upgrade its much-loved heritage buildings, especially Old Court.  Additionally, there are ambitions for brand new buildings that will help ensure Selwyn continues to offer some of the best accommodation and facilities in Cambridge.
