Body

Between 9 and 21 December, a team of Selwyn students will call our alumni and friends for a chat. Discussions between current students and alumni are often cherished by both parties, and we hope that this increases the sense of community at Selwyn. Previous student callers often note that they gained many transferrable skills and received invaluable career advice.

Fundraising is another important aspect of the campaign, and this year we would like to invite you to consider supporting the Ann's Court North project. This is the final phase of Selwyn's transformational development of Ann's Court. The project allows for a creative refurbishment of two historic hostels, brilliantly linking them together with an elegant new entrance pavilion that will also provide informal study/meeting spaces for our students. At a stroke, the buildings do an ‘about face’, abandoning their original entrances on West Road in favour of facing inwards to the court and to the college. To find out more about the project, visit the appeal webpage by clicking the button below.

This final phase has a budget of £4M making it by far the least expensive part of the overall scheme. We’ve been fortunate to secure some early donations that will help us to achieve our fundraising target of £2.5M but there is still a considerable way to go — your help is important. Please help us finish the court by participating in this year’s campaign. Click the button below to visit the appeal webpage and make your gift.

If you have any questions about the campaign, or how to donate, please get in touch with us by email on development@sel.cam.ac.uk or call us at 01223 763 937.

Ann’s Court is the most successful development at Selwyn in the past 25 years. Please help us finish.

Will F
I'm Will, a fourth-year student studying Russian and Spanish, and I'm originally from Saint-Germain-en-Laye in France. Last year, I spent six months in Panama and five months in Kazakhstan with a human rights organisation defending free speech for journalists. At Selwyn, I've really enjoyed the boat club and being part of the MCR's incredible and diverse community of students.
Sabrina
My name is Sabrina, and I am an MPhil Latin American student. I enjoy a wide mix of activities around college — I am currently in the Novice Rowing Team, running to be MCR Secretary, and a part of Selwyn Voices. Outside of college, I like sampling society mixers, attending various academic lectures, doing a weekly dance class, watching student plays and musicals and learning to play the flute!
Jack
I'm Jack. I'm from Manchester, and I am a second-year PhD student researching volcanic plumes and ash forecasting in collaboration with the Met Office. I love football (especially Manchester City) and I am an avid cyclist. I'm looking forward to speaking to alumni and hearing about their experiences at Selwyn and Cambridge.
Samara
I'm Samara, a final-year medical student with a special interest in genomics, oncology and clinical ethics and law. I completed my intercalated bachelor's in History and Philosophy of Science, and for my medical elective, I partnered with Harvard Medical School at Boston Children's Hospital. I aspire to incorporate my passion for equal opportunities in healthcare into my future clinical practice. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, taking long walks and spending time with friends and family.
Anthony
My name is Anthony, and I am a third year studying Part II Chemistry (Natural Sciences). I am passionate about synthetic organic chemistry and plan to go into research. Outside of my degree, I enjoy rehearsing and playing gigs with the Cambridge University Ceilidh Band; volunteering with the student-led charity CHaOS (Cambridge Hands On Science) and taking part in Parkrun each week! I also have fond memories rowing with SCBC in my first year, acting in Pembroke Players productions and playing in various SCMS concerts throughout my time here at Selwyn.
Alex J
I’m Alex, a third-year chemist hoping to go into synthesis. When I’m not in the department, I spend a large amount of my time rowing. I'm currently training for The Fairbairn Cup (I was in the winning novice Fairbairn crew in my first year!) and have previously been part of several blading bumps crews. I also play violin and have performed with several orchestras, from touring Scotland to playing in Selwyn Chapel with a scratch orchestra. In my free time, I’m a religious Bake Off watcher – I love trying to recreate the bakes myself!
Dylan
I’m Dylan, a third year NatSci studying Chemistry! Outside of work, I enjoy sport and since last year have been rowing with Selwyn College Boat Club, being part of a successful Lent Bumps M1 crew last year. I also follow Liverpool FC and Rugby League, especially the Australian NRL. I relax by playing guitar, as well as growing and propagating my houseplant — having what could be described as a small garden in my room!
Alex B
I'm Alex, a 3rd-year Natural Scientist. My academic interests lie primarily in behavioural ecology, particularly how animal behaviour evolves, and the consequences of this on the ability of species to persist in a changing world. Outside academics, I enjoy sports: I am on the university blues team for dance and I play squash and lacrosse in college. I am also treasurer of the Selwyn College Natural Sciences Society, and I write for the student-run BlueSci magazine. I am looking forward to my second year on the telephone campaign!
Monesha
I'm Monesha, a second-year student studying HSPS. I’m Pakistani and was raised in Pakistan, Oman and Ireland. I came to Cambridge in 2024 and have been actively involved in the Selwyn community and the wider Cambridge community since then: I cox for the college boat club and am part of the women’s football team, and have sat on the JCR as the gender equality officer.
Monica
I’m Monica, a 3rd year student studying Biological Natural Sciences. This year I am specialising in pathology. Outside of my studies, I enjoy several college societies such as netball, badminton, SCBC and the cold-water swimming society. I am also on committee for the Cambridge University Biological Society and am Co-President of the One Health Society which has allowed me to explore my interest in science policy!
Emma
I am Emma, originally from New Zealand. After graduating from the University of Queensland with a BA in Art History, I moved to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow, to attend drama school. I recently directed and co-wrote a show at The Pleasance Courtyard, for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. I have just started my MSt in Writing for Performance, and I am beyond ready to begin my new chapter in Cambridge. I love the theatre, reading, hiking and surfing. I am currently training (badly) for the London Marathon.
Imani
My name is Imani, and I’m a second year Human Social and Political Sciences student, specialising in Sociology. Upon graduation I hope to work in policy, or journalism (if the job market allows it!). During my time here I’ve not only enjoyed the wonderful community I get to share this college with, but also honed some new hobbies. In my free time I have been teaching myself to play the electric guitar and pursue anatomical sketching and photography. I cannot wait to converse about the things we may have in common and more.
Desh
I'm Desh, a 4th year mechanical engineer. I'm an avid sportsperson having represented the college at rugby, football and more recently even mixed netball! When I'm not at the engineering department you'll find me getting laps in at Jesus Green Lido, playing frisbee at any opportunity or enjoying evensong in Selwyn Chapel.
