The photos below of the interior of the Old Library were captured by photographer Sara Rawlinson, as part of her project 'Illuminating Cambridge Libraries'. Through this, Rawlinson has explored how ancient knowledge is preserved and shared, and what inspires the creation of new libraries.

Sara Rawlinson grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and now runs a full-time fine art photography studio from her home in Cambridge. Her images have been shortlisted for the International Photo Awards (2020) and Historic Photographer of the Year awards (2018 and 2019).

Inside the Old Library

Selwyn's Old Library was built in 1929 as a memorial to the 72 students, alumni, Fellows and staff killed in the First World War. The names of those who died can be found in the College Chapel.

Building a Library was suggested by students who came to Selwyn after the war. The subsequent appeal was generously supported by 300 members and friends of the College. The building was the scholarly heart of Selwyn for more than 90 years, and for generations of students.

The new Bartlam Library opened in Ann's Court in 2021. The Old Library has since been refurbished as part of the celebrations for the College's 140th Anniversary. The building has been transformed to provide new teaching, archive and office spaces, generously funded by alumni and friends of Selwyn.
