In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Mathematical Tripos was the premier Tripos, and the distinction of being Senior Wrangler (top of the results list) for the year was much coveted. However, where there is a first there is also a last, and the custom arose of the lowest ranked junior optime being presented with a wooden spoon on degree day at Senate House. It is worth noting that this was the lowest-ranked honours degree (third class), and those achieving ordinary degrees would have placed below the wooden spoon.

In 1906, two Selwyn men were joint lowest ranked, so each received a wooden spoon from their friends. This spoon was presented to W J B Crouch and is finely painted with the College arms and a view of the Senate House on a green background. It is one of the few surviving examples, as the custom ceased after 1909. This spoon was given to the College by Mr C Cameron in 1960.
