The Old Library

Nestled under the canopy of Selwyn’s last surviving elm tree, The Old Library was completed in 1930 as a memorial to alumni and staff who died in the First World War. Originally funded by an alumni appeal, the building has long been a cherished part of the College’s heritage. Recent refurbishment work, as part of the 140th anniversary appeal, has transformed the Old Library into a modern, multi-functional space while honouring its historical significance, thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends.
The ground floor has been reimagined as a suite of five flexible teaching and supervision spaces. Among these is a dedicated anatomical teaching room equipped with cutting-edge technology, including an Anatomage Table – a 3D virtual dissection tool designed to enhance the education of medical and veterinary students. During the long vacation, these spaces also complement Selwyn’s conference facilities, providing additional income for the College.

The 1980s extension now houses the College archives and rare books collection. With dedicated display and research areas, this upgrade ensures greater accessibility and appreciation of Selwyn’s rich archival resources.

Upstairs, key elements of the original library’s fixtures and furniture have been preserved, acknowledging the building’s heritage. This space has been repurposed as an office for the alumni relations and development team. Adjacent to the office is an informal alumni and friends’ parlour – a welcoming area for visitors to gather, meet friends, browse the collection of alumni publications, or simply connect with the friendly alumni team before College events.

Be part of the next chapter of Selwyn’s development
As a college that was founded in the late 19th century without an endowment, the development of Selwyn’s estate has always depended on the generosity of benefactors, both alumni and other friends. In the 21st century, the college continues to evolve plans to upgrade its much-loved heritage buildings, especially Old Court. Additionally, there are ambitions for brand new buildings that will help ensure Selwyn continues to offer some of the best accommodation and facilities in Cambridge.
