  • Selwyn’s annual London Carol service for alumni and friends takes place at 7pm on Tuesday December 6th at St James’s Piccadilly. This is the second year we’ve been at the church, by invitation of its rector Lucy Winkett (SE 1987). There will be the traditional readings and Carols for all, along with performances by the Choir. The service ends with the church lit entirely by candlelight, which is always a magical moment in the run-up to Christmas.

  • Some of Selwyn’s best-known and longest-serving staff were praised in the House of Commons by Labour MP – and Selwyn alumnus – Wes Streeting. He was speaking in a debate about the Higher Education Bill, and he argued that non-academic staff were sometimes undervalued in terms of their representation within the university sector. He cited his own time at Selwyn as an example of the role staff can play:

  • Selwyn has hosted an alumni reception and taken part in outreach activity in India . as part of an
initiative shared with the wider University. Our senior tutor Mike Sewell went to a school in
Mumbai with Cambridge’s director of undergraduate recruitment Jon Beard, who.s a Selwyn bye-fellow.

  • The college welcomed back more of its distinguished alumnae on Saturday November 12th as part of
the celebrations of 40 years of women at Selwyn. They were attending a series of networking
sessions at which some of our most successful women talked to current students about their lives
and careers. The event started with drinks in the Master’s Lodge; and there was an excellent
turnout by students for the later meetings across the site.

  • There's been recognition of the work of Selwyn's Professor Daping Chu, who is one
of our Fellows in Engineering. He received a Distinguished Visiting Professorship from Tsinghua
University when he was in Beijing last week. He also gave a lecture there on phase-only spatial
    light modulators and applications.

He's pictured (centre) with members of the Chinese University.

  • Selwyn is continuing its welcome for first-year students with the start of another season of informal Freshers' suppers in the Master's Lodge. The picture shows Roger Mosey with the first set of guests this year - who are studying law, philosophy and music. Some of the college's Fellows attend too: in this case Dr Joe Sampson, on the right, and Dr Rupert Thompson who took the photograph.

  • There’s just a short time left before the October 15th deadline for applications to Cambridge for 2017. Here's the information from the university: http://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/applying

  • Selwyn celebrated the 40th anniversary of the admission of women students with a reunion and dinner on Saturday September 24th. There was an excellent turnout from the 1976 year group, the first to be co-educational. The Master, Roger Mosey, used the occasion to salute the pioneers – and to underline the College’s commitment to diversity. Here’s an extract from his speech:
