Visits to Cambridge

Body

Visiting the University effectively raises aspirations by allowing pupils to begin envisaging themselves at a top university, encouraging them to stay committed to education and continue to reach their academic potential.

New College GroupThe Schools Liaison Officer can organise visits to the University from all primary and secondary school year groups. These visits are free for state schools in our link areas; if your school is not in our link areas but you are still interested in a visit, please get in contact as it still may be possible to host a visit.

Typically, visits to the colleges consist of a mix of the following, but this is not exclusive:

Presentations

  • Aspiring to Higher Education
  • The Cambridge System Explained
  • Subject Matters – How to Choose A Level Subjects
  • Applying to Oxbridge/Russell Group Universities
  • What is University? (for primary pupils)

Specific Sessions and Workshops

  • Tour of Selwyn College
  • Student Life Workshop
  • Interview Workshop
  • Personal Statement Workshop
  • A range of workshops delivered by subject faculties e.g. debating workshop, engineering sessions

Visits outside of Selwyn College

  • Visit to a museum
  • Walk around town
  • Tour of faculty buildings
  • Tour of another college

These activities will normally be run by the Schools Liaison Officers, however sometimes Admissions Tutors and Departmental Outreach Staff can be involved, depending on availability. Visits can be tailored to match the needs of the visitors; if there is a topic related to university that isn't listed but you would like covered during your visit, please contact the Schools Liaison Officer when booking.

If your visit is during University term time, our current undergraduate students will often help with the visit (if available) and are happy to run:

  • Student Run College Tour
  • Student Panel (Q+A session)

Prospective students often find the opportunity to speak with current students very useful and an extremely popular part of the day; this allows students to ask questions they wouldn’t otherwise ask!

For day visits to the College, we recommend that you allow approximately 5 hours so we can provide a wide range of activities and deliver an informative visit. A sample programme has been attached.

Visits to the college prove extremely popular and therefore we advise you to plan and arrange your visit at least 3 months in advance of the planned event date. Please note we are unable to have any visitors in November/December due to our admissions and interviewing period.

If you are interested in a visit, please contact the Schools Liaison Officers (schools-liaison@sel.cam.ac.uk).
