Thanks to the generosity of our alumni, Selwyn has a number of funds available dedicated to supporting students in particular subjects in academic-related activities or ambitious vacation projects. There is a separate application form separate from that for general travel grants. You will be prompted to identify from the list the one Fund that you feel most closely corresponds to your project. Your application may nonetheless be considered for support from other funds. Please do not submit multiple applications unless you are proposing two entirely separate projects. For example, an application indicating the Darlington Fund for Physical Sciences might also be considered for the Langley or the Walters Kundert or other Funds.
Grants are usually only made to students who will be returning to undergraduate study in the following academic year (including fourth-year MEng, MSci and other Part III students) or, where eligible, to postgraduate and clinical students who will remain registered as students. Only in exceptional circumstances and with strong Tutorial support will grants be made to students who are graduating.
The purpose of the grants is explained in more detail in the further particulars. However, please note that it is expected that applications to these funds will clearly demonstrate a significant subject-related component, with the exception of the Turnbull Fund for American travel. Those seeking support for recreational travel should apply through the general travel grants process. In completing an application, please only use the form provided by the College. That involves abiding by the word limits. Please do not include links to additional information that cannot be fitted into the form.
Awards from these funds are intended to make a significant contribution to the cost of the project. However, it is not to be assumed that the full cost will necessarily be contributed. Please discuss with your DoS and/or Tutor how far you can contribute and at what level you would no longer be able to afford the project. Your Tutor will then be able to address this issue in the comments section that they are asked to complete.
If you incur expenses before the applications open or before the deadline for applications, please raise the matter with your Tutor. With the two exceptions listed below, the usual practice is to consider retrospective applications for expenses incurred after 1st October of the current academic year rather than take piecemeal decisions during the year. Applications pertaining to the previous academic year or the long vacation before the current year will not usually be considered.
Decisions will be taken during the Easter vacation in order to allow students to include any funding they receive if they also make an application for a general travel grant. Most of the projects supported will be ambitious and will be expected to contribute significantly to the applicant’s studies, personal or professional development. It is anticipated that those who receive funding from these funds will not usually also be eligible for the travel grants covered in Section 5.6 for the same project.
If funds remain unspent after the first round of decisions, new applications to a later deadline will be considered in the Easter Term.
For most Funds there is an initial application deadline of the Friday 27th March 2026. The following funds operate to a different timetable:
- The Beker Mathematics Fund is open for applications at any point in the year.
- Devonport Architecture Fund is open for applications at any point in the year.
To apply, please submit the application form. In completing the form please only include numbers in the fields asking for details of costs. Using £, $ or € or other symbols prevents the automatic computation of the total cost.
In all cases it is a condition of accepting the grant that the student shall submit a report online about their activities by the Division of the following Term.

The College’s support for travel does not imply that it is responsible for the safety of the traveller. These are independent projects. Tutors will expect their students to confirm that applicants for these funds have undertaken any appropriate risk assessments and that they have checked Foreign Office advice on their destination(s). The College also encourages any traveller to ensure that they have all appropriate vaccinations before they travel.
